In the heart of the city of Sur in the Sultanate of Oman, stands the most famous lighthouse in the Gulf and Arabian Peninsula, a testament to a long and extensive maritime civilization.
The Al Aijah Lighthouse, also known as the "Ras Al Mil Tower," is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Wilayat of Sur. It is located in the Al Aijah area of Sur at the entrance to the Khor Al Batha Bridge, near the Sur Shipyard and the Sur Maritime Museum.
Concerning its history, the Portuguese built this lighthouse, which is considered one of the oldest maritime lighthouses in the Sultanate. Originally a guard tower, it was later converted into a lighthouse used to guide traditional dhows safely to the Sur Lagoon, according to the Discover Oman website.
The lighthouse offers a stunning panoramic view of the city of Sur, described as "the pearl of the eastern coast of the Sultanate of Oman."
The city of Sur was famous in the past, and continues to be, for its shipbuilding, fishing, and maritime transport, and it has a long maritime history. It overlooks the sea to the east.
The Arab Tourism Organization recently selected it as the Arab Tourism Capital for 2024.
